Psychosis patients aren’t getting the best care

Healthcare, Health, Mental Health

Research suggests that underfunding is leading to a lack of care for those with severe mental health conditions in England.

If someone is experiencing a first episode of psychosis they should be seen within two weeks.

However, Liberal Democrat research shows that even though more people are being seen on time, only a few of them get the correct treatment.

The NHS in England stated that ‘the analysis inevitably gives only a partial and dated picture of progress’.

In April 2016, the Department of Health introduced new care and treatment standards for psychosis.

These new standards say that at least 50% of people experience their first episode of psychosis should get started on a care package which has been recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) within two weeks of being referred.

Out of all the 45 mental health trusts which responded the data showed:

  • Four didn’t provide any information
  • Five said that they were making progress on the matter
  • Twelve said that they were able to provide the full NICE approved treatment
  • 24 said they were not
